Haywood EMC names Tom Batchelor to succeed Norman Sloan as CEO
Tom Batchelor has been selected as Executive Vice President & CEO of Haywood Electric Membership Corporation (HEMC) headquartered in Waynesville. Batchelor moved into the position upon the retirement of Executive Vice President & General Manager Norman Sloan in April.
Batchelor brings over 23 years of cooperative knowledge and experience to this position. He began in the electrical utility business in 1982 after graduating from NC State University with the City of Monroe and has since worked for two other cooperatives and an electrical consulting firm before coming to HEMC in 1999 as Assistant General Manager/Manager of Operations and Engineering. He is a registered Professional Engineer in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
Batchelor is married to his wife Robin with three grown children and 2 grandchildren.
Sloan retires from a distinguished career with more than 30 years in the electric cooperative industry with the last 21 as General Manager of Haywood EMC.
The HEMC board of directors named Batchelor as Executive Vice President/CEO to succeed Sloan. This announcement comes with a mixture of sadness and excitement as Sloan leaves a legacy of being a great leader who cares for every member of his cooperative family and employees as exhibited in how he always handled the big challenges he faced while serving. Nonetheless, Batchelor has extensive knowledge and experience in all aspects of the industry that will be of great benefit to the members. Your Board of Directors are confident he will provide exceptional leadership to the Cooperative.
